Common Causes of Radon Problems in Calgary

Natural Breakdown of Uranium

Radon is primarily produced from the natural decay of uranium found in soil, rock, and water. This gas can seep into the air you breathe, becoming a health risk over time.

Home Cracks

Any openings in the foundation, walls, or floors of your home, such as cracks or gaps, can act as entry points for radon.

Construction Joints

The joints between construction materials can often be less sealed than other parts of a building, allowing radon to infiltrate.

Gaps Around Pipes and Wires

Openings where pipes and wires enter the house provide another way for radon to enter, particularly if these are not fully sealed.

Poor Ventilation

Homes with inadequate ventilation, especially in lower levels like basements and crawl spaces, can have higher concentrations of radon as the gas becomes trapped and accumulates.

Radon Mitigation Services We Provide In Alberta

Create a Healthier, Safer Home: Remove Radon

What We Do

  • Redirecting Air Flow: The “stack effect” pulls air up from beneath your home. By depressurizing the soil underneath, we can steer radon gas away from these areas.
  • Creating a Suction Point: We drill a hole into the foundation to act as a suction point for the radon gas. Depending on your home’s size, multiple suction points might be necessary.
  • Installing Ventilation Pipes: We then vent the radon gas through a pipe connected to the suction point. This pipe can be routed either inside or outside the house.
  • Venting Radon Outdoors: The PVC pipe is hooked to a fan, usually located in the basement or in an insulated box outside. The fan expels the radon gas outside, above ground level, to prevent it from re-entering the home.
  • Sealing Entry Points: We seal cracks and openings in the foundation and walls using caulk to minimize radon entry.
  • System Inspection: After installation, the system undergoes a thorough check to ensure it meets all safety guidelines.
  • Retesting for Radon: Lastly, we test the system’s effectiveness to ensure it significantly reduces radon levels.

Radon Mitigation FAQs

The EPA recommends taking action to mitigate radon in homes with radon levels at or above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air.

Properly designed and installed radon mitigation systems can reduce radon levels by up to 99%.

It’s recommended to have a professional install the system to ensure it meets EPA guidelines and is effective in reducing radon levels.

Cory came to my house, thoroughly evaluated the situation, explained the options to me, and patiently answered all of my questions. He is amazing. There was a crack in my basement wall that needed to be repaired. Paul (I think) did a good and clean Job. The repair was scheduled and completed exactly as was described to me. Great team! I’d definitely recommend this company to others.

Excellent service. Sales was pleasant and quote was thorough enough to proceed. The crew that came out to excavate, and install the interior and exterior basement systems was absolutely top notch – their work was neat and tidy, they showed up on time, and worked hard. To top it off, they (and all the folks involved) have to be the most pleasant contractors I’ve ever dealt with – and this is house #5 for us over the years! Thank you, Basement Authority. Highly recommend.

Yesterday we had our sump pump service by Ben and was very pleased with the work. He was knowledgeable and took care in his work. He was very friendly and explained what he was going to do. Very good at his job and we’ll ask for him if we need any work done in the future.
